Communities respond to HIV and AIDSGreater community involvement was one of the outstanding characteristics of the 4th SA AIDS Conference. An entire track was dedicated to address and demonstrate communities’ response to mitigate the effect of HIV and AIDS. Community-based and faith-based organisations participated enthusiastically in discussions, expanded their networks of support and established new links to strengthen the ability of communities to scale-up their actions to fight HIV and AIDS. The community track at the 4th SA AIDS Conference laid the foundation for stronger, bigger and more comprehensive community participation in forthcoming SA AIDS Conferences. Linked to this was a report-back on Round Table discussions relating to the Durban II Declaration , which emanated from the 3rd SA AIDS Conference in 2007. The objective was to review the status of the Declaration and discuss the way forward. There was useful discussion around the role of the Declaration as a tool to monitor the implementation of the National Strategic Plan (NSP). The role of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) as an implementer of the Declaration came also under the spotlight.
